Feeling the need to kick my photography habit up a notch, I’ve started yet another blog. This time it’s a photo blog. The intention is to focus my attention on crafting images worthy of their own place. Flickr is a great way to share lots of photos, and I will continue to post lost of photos to Flickr. But the new blog will be my place for highlighting the cream of the crop, such as it is. My hope is this will make me a better photographer. God knows there is plenty of room for improvement.

The site is a work in progress. Come by for a visit and let me know what you think.

Update: OK, so it really is a work in progress, which means it’s going to have a few issues. Like the feeds are little wonky and it’s a little slow to load. I’m working on caching and other tweaks to make it perform better. And navigation needs some work. I may even switch platforms mid-stream if this WordPress hack doesn’t hack it. Stay tuned.

For the longest time Google Desktop Search always displayed my search results in Internet Explorer rather than Firefox, my default browser. Try as I might I could not make GDS understand that my default browser really is Firefox and not that blasted IE.

It turns out GDS looks for browser handling instructions in a dimly lit and dusty corner of the Windows Registry, a place not subject to the commands sent from the “Set Program Access and Defaults” applet or “Tools | Options | Default Browser” setting. If you would like to sever ties completely between GDS and IE, here’s how:

Open the registry editor:
regedit

Find:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command

You will likely see a string value with the full path to
iexplore.exe
. Replace the value with:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -nohome

Enjoy GDS once again.

I found this solution in the archives of the Google Desktop Google Group. Thanks CB!

One final note for those who’ve installed the latest GDS v3 beta, do not enable “search across computers.” At this point, it’s an unnecesarry privacy and security risk. More on that here and here.

This Alex Gregory cartoon from the March 8th issue of The New Yorker struck a hilarious chord. To be a pig in Kandahar. Would it really be so grand? Turns out that pigs are not spared the dinnertable because of taste but because they are deemed unclean by both the Koran and the Bible. There are legitimate health reasons not to eat pork. Perhaps because of their omnivorous eating habits, they are quite well adapted to carry and spread disease, most notoriously, trichinosis. Pigs also happen to be extremely smart and trainable, on par with some excellent canine breeds.

BTW, the Bible forbids eating or even touching the dead flesh of a pig (Deuteronomy, 14: 8), however, most Christians do not observe this particular stricture. Muslims are generally more rigorous in following this, and other, divine laws. According to the Koran, it is alright to eat pork if you find yourself in a helpless situation, like say, starvation brought upon by war, therefore, being a pig in, say, Afganistan these days doesn’t by law make you any less likely not to get eaten.
