Every time you turn your head in America a new advertisement presents itself in your field of vision. One of the most senseless, and avoidable, is the auto dealer license plate frame. I don’t have any figures on the subject, but I suspect that seven out of ten cars on the road have an auto dealer advertisement surrounding the government-issue license plate.

It used to be common practice for auto dealers to put a difficult-to-remove badge on a vehicle’s rump as part of the “dealer prep” service. This has changed in the last decade or so to the less-permanent license plate frame, which is perhaps more visible than a badge but also easily removed. So why don’t people remove the damn frames? Are car owners really so enamored of their dealers that they are willing to drive around town freely exclaiming their patronage? Do they not realize that the frame serves no function in securing the license plate to the car?

What really kills me is when you see a car of a certain make, let’s say a Mercedes Benz, with the dealer frame of a local Isuzu peddler. Ok, so you care enough about what people think of your ride to pay the premium on a Benz and then you defile it’s expensive styling with a cheesy black-plastic advert for the used car dealer you bought it from? Come on, people.
