Coyote Sighting

Today was a little more exciting than usual. I crossed paths with a coyote. It came out of the brush unexpectedly about 50 feet away, then turned around and stared at me. I let out an involuntary whoop! and clapped my hands and it took off through the trees. I decided to turn around and head back to the office.

My close encounter with the wild happened in a green space that winds through and around a suburban area of Bellevue. There’s a large office complex under construction within a few hundred yards of where the coyote and I locked eyes. Here’s a map.

Coyotes are present in most areas in the U.S. We are seeing a trend of coyotes coming out during the day - in the past they were only coming out at night. As they become more used to people they are less fearful of people. It is important to not feed pets outside, not leave animals alone outside (even in fenced yards), and to use motion sensor lights on your property. You did the right thing - don’t try to pet or confront a coyote. A mother coyote could try to protect her young.
