Butterfield Lutes
If you or someone you know is looking for a six or seven course Renaissance lute with a rosewood or ebony fingerboard built after the fashion of Gerle (and let’s face it, who isn’t?) then I urge you to take a look at Butterfield Lutes.
The best materials available are used in the construction of each lute. Woods include European pear and plum, Honduran rosewood, and figured English ash.
The lute-maker, John Butterfield, who is a friend of mine, follows historical methods. Roses and bridges are carved by hand. He turns his own pegs from rosewood, plum, or boxwood. Nuts are made from bone. Quality hide glue is used for all assemblies and instrument backs are finished with a traditional oil varnish.
These are quality lutes made available at affordable prices.
